Training

All leaders must complete two basic trainings: Girl Scout FUNdamentals and a specific Age-Level training.

Girl Scout FUNdamentals

Girl Scout FUNdamentals is offered for both the Girl Scout leader, and for those volunteers who are not going to be leaders, but serve in another volunteer capacity.

Daisy Age Level

Daisy Girl Scouts are full of wonder and excitement.  The young girls in your troop will be introduced for the first time to the Girl Scout program.  This training will give you an understanding of the age level characteristics of Daisy Girl Scouts, how to include Daisy Girl Scouts in the planning process, troop government, finance, safety standards and bridging activities.  You will review resources available to you as a Daisy Girl Scout leader.

Brownie Age Level

Brownie Girl Scouts are eager to help and learn new skills.  The young girls in your troop will be excited about being a Girl Scout and will look to you as a role model.  This training will give you an understanding of the age level characteristics of Brownie Girl Scouts, how to include Brownie Girl Scouts in the planning process, troop government, finance, and safety standards.  You will experience a sample Girl Scout meeting and review resources available to you as a Brownie Girl Scout leader.

Junior Age Level

Junior Girl Scouts are eager to test out their independence and are becoming more aware of the world around them.  This training will give you an understanding of the age level characteristics of Junior Girl Scouts, how to include Junior Girl Scouts in the planning process,  troop government, finance, and safety standards.  You will experience a sample Girl Scout meeting and review resources available to you as a Junior Girl Scout leader.

Cadette/Senior Age Level

Girls ages 11-17 are becoming responsible, independent young women.  As their troop leader/advisor, you will become more of an advisor than a true leader, helping the girls in your troop/group to lead themselves.  This training focuses on the age level characteristics of girls ages 11-17, and how to use girl/adult planning and experiential learning with time as well as offering guidance on troop/group government, behavior management and ways to increase retention of older girls with busy schedules.  You will also review resources available to you as a Cadette/Senior leader or STUDIO 2B advisor.

Training Combos

The following courses are offered on the same day at the same location for your convenience.

  • Creating an Inclusive Culture in Girl Scouting

  • Brownie Age Level

  • Junior Age Level

Creating an Inclusive Culture in Girl Scouting (formerly Valuing Differences)

This course is undergoing some changes as a result of our recent merger.  Until further notice, this course is not a requirement for leaders, although it is still recommended.

Training Festivals

Training festivals are sponsored at the following locations throughout the council's geographic area.  They are designed with you, the leader, in mind.  Training festivals will allow you to complete most of your required job trainings in one day with bonus of a workshop after the lunch period.

First Aid

Girl Scouts - Great Rivers Council offers American Red Cross First Aid and CPR trainings in cooperation with the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Lodge Camping

This course is designed to prepare volunteers who work with young or inexperienced Girl Scouts to lead them on their first overnight camping experience in a lodge.  Participants will gain confidence in their ability to work with girls to plan, implement, and evaluate a trip to a Great Rivers Council lodge.  Progression, safety and outdoor activities will be discussed, along with the logistics of working with rangers and reserving a lodge for troops.

Basic Camping

Camping is a favorite activity and tradition in Girl Scouts.  It is important that an adult has the skills necessary to make your troop camping experience safe, fun and educational.  This course will certify participants to take girls camping either in a lodge or tent. You will learn how to involve girls in the planning process, preparation of personal and troop equipment, basic outdoor skill development, outdoor cooking, safety procedures, ecology, night time activities, ceremonies, and camp fire program activities.
